Enlisted on 11/9/1861 in Richmond, for 12 months' service, he was mustered into Company C, 1st Maryland Infantry as a Privat eat Centreville, VA.
Discharged 6/9/1862.
Worked in Richmond as clerk for C.S.A. QuarterMaster, Major John Ambler, through 10/1862.
Mustered in 1863 into into Mosby's 43rd Battalion Virginia Partisan Cavalry as a Private.
KIA 4/29/1864 in Leesburg, VA. when he and several Rangers who had been foraging nearby, were lounging around the hotel when surprised by the appearance of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. He and another Ranger tried to flee on horseback.
Thomas was initially buried locally, but 3 days later, his brother retrieved his body, taking it to his hometown of Baltimore for burial.
Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December, 1864. The battalion was formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight. The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were never safe and the area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy".
