End came To Well Known Resident at His home on West Fourth Street
Gaines G. Berry, almost 91 years old, died at 2:15 o'clock this afternoon at his home, 705 West Fourth street, death being due to general debility.

Mr Berry was among a number of Sedalians over 90 years old whose picture and brief biographical sketches were published in the Democrat on Sunday morning, February 20.

Mr. Berry came here from Kentucky in the early seventies, and since that time with the exception of the past ten years, has been engaged in active farming.

He was born April 30, 1836, in Mason County, Kentucky, a short distance from Maysville. He received his early education in that state, and was married there, October 6, 1863, to Miss Eliza Jane Seed.

He did not serve in the Civil War, he explained, because with "the condition Kentucky was in then, that dodging between the two armies was about the best that could be done." He had made up his mind several times to join the Confederate forces, but never actually enlisted.

April 4, 1870, saw Mr. Berry leave Kentucky and come to Missouri, where he since has continually spent his life.

On his arrival in Missouri, located on the farm now occupied by Stone McClure, near Hughesville, better known as the old Gaines farm. Leaving there, he went up on Heaths Creek, renting the Henry Mills farm and living on it for the ensuing twenty-eight years.

On leaving the Mills', farm Mr. Berry bought a farm of 80 acres three miles northeast from Sedalia, living there almost a decade, then traded it for property at Dresden where he lived seven years.

In the past several years, Mr. Berry has done no active farming but insists that in his residence at Dresden that "I wasn't retired, for I had plenty of work to do."

He then moved to Sedalia, where he has been living for the past three years.

Mr. Berry was the father of seven children, five of whom are still living, one son, "Squire" Gaines, having died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles Kemp, four years ago last September. They are: Mrs. Joe Elliott of Hughesville, Mrs. Mary Allison of Sedalia, Mrs. Sam Grinstead of Sedalia, E. P. Berry, also of Sedalia, who is connected with the Johannes Hardware store, and Miss Martha Berry, who lives at the home address and took care of her father.

Mr. Berry is a member of the Christian church, joining that congregation in 1855. With the exception of Mrs. Cotton, he is the oldest member of that church now in Sedalia.

He was also a charter member of the Pettis County Grange, organized here in the seventies, the forerunner of the Pettis County Granges of today. Other members at that time included john Sneed, Peter Courtney and Obe Harris.
