At Rest With Jesus.
Little Harry Bender, youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bender, died on Monday last at 7 o’clock a. m., and was buried on Tuesday at 10 o’clock a. m. Age 1 year, 4 months and five days.
The funeral services were held at the residence, corner of 9th and Joplin streets, Rev. E. J. Durham, of the M. E. church, officiating.
Although the little one had been ill for several days, no one dreamed that death was so near, and its dreaded coming was rendered doubly sad by its suddenness. The bereaved family scarcely realized that their darling was seriously ill, when the icy hand was laid upon him and he was, with hardly a warning, clasped in the embrace of death; called home to the Father who gave him.
Who can doubt that the baby boy racked with pain and suffering yesterday, is happy, free from all pain, in that glorious haven of rest, the arms of Jesus today? Who can deny that, with firm faith in this belief should come consolation? And yet who can claim that this knowledge satisfies the sorrowing parent? Who can say that the mother's heart-bleeding is checked by this knowledge? Believe it as she may, an hundred times a day the heart-wound is torn afresh by thoughts of the little one gone before. By day it bleeds, as her eyes falls upon the thousand little reminders of the lost boy. By night it bleeds, as in her dreams she again clasps the little one to her breast and awakes to find it but a dream.
And so with the father, being the stronger, his wounds may heal the sooner, but the tearing them afresh is none the less painful, as he crosses his threshold and finds no little hands, no childish prattle, to greet him. Ah! the fathers or mothers, who can surrender to God their baby darlings with a sincere, "Thy will be done" are indeed christians. Those who have been called upon to do so, realize what it means to submit without a murmur, to His will; those who have not, know nothing of it.
We would say to the parents who have suffered, seek consolation in the fact that it is in your power to go to your child. It cannot come to you. It remains with you to say whether or no you shall again be united. This power will give you consolation if you properly exercise it. The parting will seem but temporary, if you so live that your steps day by day decrease the distance between you and the loved ones gone before.
