DR. H. A. BENDER DIES

Well Known Galena Dentist
Succumbs After Lingering Illness.

Dr. Henry A. Bender died at 9 o'clock this morning at the family residence, 901 Joplin street.

For the last two years it has been aparent that his health was gradually failing and he has been confined to his bed the last ten weeks.

Henry A. Bender was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, August 29, 1847.

He enlisted in Company E 159th Pennsylvania Infantry in the early part of 1865, serving until the close of the Civil War.

He came to Kansas in the early seventies locating in Galena in 1880, where he has practiced dentistry until two years ago, excepting when serving as Register of Deeds of Cherokee county from 1896 to 1898 during which time he resided in Columbus.

He was City Clerk of Galena a number of years, later becoming Postmaster under President Harrison's administration.

Dr. Bender is survived by two daughters and one son, Mrs. Henry P. Campbell, of Kansas City, and Mrs. R. A. Coles of this city, and Mr. Jessie R. Bender of Galena, also two brothers, Tobias Bender, of Kansas City, Kansas, who is at present in California, and D. M. Bender, residing in Parsons.

His wife died two years ago, February 13, 1914.

Dr. Bender has been a member of the I.O.O.F., forty years and was a charter member of the local order also a member of A.O.U.W., No. 9, the Sons and Daughters of Justice and of the G.A.R., No. 54 Frank P. Blair Post, of which he was a Past Commander, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Galena.

His was a heart of gold. He was one of nature's noblemen in its truest sense, brave, generous, and manly. His was the soul of honor, and his friends and friendships were sacred to him.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Monday afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal church conducted by the pastor, Rev. O. C. Bronston, under the auspices of the local I.O.O.F.

The body will lie in state Monday from 10 o'clock until 1 o'clock at the residence.

Bender Funeral Held

Funeral services for Dr. H. A. Bender, who died at his home 901 Joplin street, at 9 o'clock Friday morning were held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church. Rev. Oliver C. Bronston officiating.

Burial was in the Galena cemetery.

The I.O.O.F. Order were in charge of the services.

The active pallbearers were: Samuel Gates, Bert Russell, E. E. Julian, Jesse Pinson, William Walker and Joe Evans.

The music was furnished by a quartette composed of Mrs. Emil Schellack, Frank Coe, Arthur Davis and Miss Lillie Davis.

He practiced dentistry in Galena, Ks. He also served as Register of Deed in Cherokee county, was City Clerk in Galena & later became a Postmaster.
