He was born April 4, 1947 in Bartow, WV, a son of the late E. Reed Turner and Velma Marie Ray.
Jerry graduated from Green Bank High School in 1965. He attended Potomac State College 1965-66, 1st year Engineering program, and then transferred to Penn Technical Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, where he obtained his Associate in Specialized Technology degree in 1968.
Jerry worked his entire 50 year career for the Green Bank Observatory, first as a Technician Trainee, summer and part time while attending school, then as an Electronics Technician, retiring in 2017. He lived at his homeplace in Arbovale for a few years after graduation, then moved to Minnehaha Springs for a short time, and then moved to Marlinton.
In his younger years, he had an interest in cars, owning a Chevelle, a Corvette, and several Cutlass models. He liked to travel, highlighted by taking a solo trip to Canada in his Corvette.
He also built and flew RC airplanes and would travel to RC events in West Virginia and Virginia. He married Linda Moses of Marlinton on December 5, 1980 at Huntersville Baptist Church. Their marriage ended in divorce in 2019.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Gladys "Bunny" Vance of Green Bank.
He is survived by his brother, David Turner and wife Sandy, of Fork Union, VA, brother-in-law Bob Vance of Green Bank, nieces Elizabeth McFarland and husband Micah, of Los Angeles CA, Patricia Turner of Denver, CO, Roberta Vance of Morgantown, WV, and Susan Stafford of Westernport, MD.
A funeral service will be 1:00pm on April 1, 2021 at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Arbovale with Pastor David Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will follow at the Arbovale Cemetery
