Carolyn was born Sept. 24, 1928, in Wewoka, to Guy L. and Dora Payne Cross. She married Walter Lewis Herrin on June 13, 1948, in Wewoka.
She taught in the Duncan Public Schools for 25 years, and received the Duncan Teacher of the Year award in 1971. From 1966-67, she taught in Eloy, Ariz. Carolyn taught private lessons in piano and voice for many years. She was an active member and elder of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as organist for 16 years, choir director for 14 years, Sunday school teacher, women's Bible moderator, youth sponsor, and member of the Worship Committee. The Women of the Church presented her with a life membership in 1966.
She was a member of Stephens County Retired Educators Association; Duncan Chapter, regent and first vice regent of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution; South Central District president, district membership chairman and state convention chairman of the General Federated Women's Clubs of Oklahoma; charter member of Stephens County Music Association, and member of Duncan Federated Music Club. She had been active in her professional organizations, Oklahoma Music Teachers' Association, Oklahoma Music Educators' Association, Oklahoma Music Adjudicators' Association, and Duncan Educators' Association.
Her main passions were teaching and playing music, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling and reading. She will be missed by her many students, friends, and family.
(Hopefully, I spelled everything correctly, Mom.)
