Walter was one of three sons born to George and Elizabeth Smith Backous: George William 1894, Walter E. 1897 and Harold Oxley 1900. Elizabeth died in England before George and his three sons immigrated in 1906.

Walter married Laura Eugenia Bell 20 Aug 1918 and they had a family of three children: Kathry Aleta, Marvin Lyle and Nancy Jo.
