Elijah at the age of nineteen left home, working by the day and month, in Kentucky, until he accumulated enough means, and about the year 1833, he migrated with his wife and family to Illinois. They came by wagon drawn by a team of oxen. They first located in Wayne County, Illinois, but removed to Menard County, ILL , and resided there until 1838, selling his land, removing to Richmond Township, Cass County, ILL. He bought eighty acres of land, a log house already on it. This was their home for a year. Elijah was a farmer, he was also a deacon of the Primitive Baptist Church in Cass Co., ILL.

Lydia, his wife was one of 5 children and two half-brothers. Her father, Simpson Montgomery was Scottish parentage. He died while being struck on the head with a gun.
