US Presidential Cabinet Secretary, US Senator, US Congressman. He served as the 18th United States Secretary of Labor during the Administration of President Ronald W. Reagan (1985 to 1987). A member of the Republican Party, he served Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1963 until 1971. From 1971 until 1977, he represented Tennessee in the United States Senate. Born into the family who founded the Tennessee based candy manufacturer Brock's Candy Company, his grandfather William Emerson Brock served in the United States Senate from Tennessee. He was educated at Washington and Lee University, prior to serving with the United States Navy. Following his return home, he worked for his family's candy business and rose to an executive. He succeeded James B. Frazier, Jr. in the US House of Representatives and during this capacity, he partially supported President Johnson's Civil Rights legislation. He succeeded Al Gore, Sr. for a US Senatorial seat from Tennessee. From 1981 until 1985, he served as the 8th United States Trade Representative, prior to succeeding Raymond J. Donovan as United States Secretary of Labor in 1985. During his tenure, Brock will be remembered for rectifying relations with the administration and organized labor leaders. After leaving Washington, he settled in Maryland and had an unsuccessful bid for US Senate in 1994. He died from pneumonia.
