Born February 13, 1913, he was the son of the late Joseph Alfred and Elizabeth Leonard Moretz. He attended Hickory High School and Lenoir-Rhyne College where he became a charter member of the Lenoir-Rhyne Business School.
Mr. Moretz served in the US Navy during World War II. After returning from his tour in the Navy, he began his career in the hosiery industry with Elliott Knitting Mills. He founded Newton-based Moretz Mills Inc. in May of 1946.
He was a lifelong member of the Newton Kiwanis Club, past President and member of the Executive Club in Hickory, served on the Catawba County Tax Evaluation Board, past President of the Eastern Catawba County Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Catawba Country Club. Mr. Moretz held many offices within the hosiery industry and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for the Hosiery Industry.
He was active in the Lutheran Church and was a member of Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton, where he donated the pipe organ currently used by the church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant grandchildren, Steven Harris Moretz and Kathleen Janette Moretz; brothers, O. Leonard Moretz, Joseph Alfred Moretz and William Henry Moretz; and a sister, Elizabeth Moretz Upgren.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Morris Moretz; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Hugh Moretz, Jr. and Nancy King Moretz of Redding, CT, John Morris Moretz and Marilyn Manning Moretz of Hickory and Dr. McCoy Lee Moretz and Teri Duke Moretz of Cartersville, GA; sisters, Alice Moretz Lee of Hickory, Josephine Moretz Lauerman of Clemmons and Martha Moretz Wellman of Clemmons; grandchildren, Laura Manning Moretz of San Francisco, CA, Charles Morris Moretz of Hickory, NC, Brandon McCoy Moretz of Cartersville, GA, Trevor Duke Moretz, Colin Edward Charles Moretz, Ethan Morris Moretz and Chloe Grace Moretz, all of Cartersville, GA.
A Memorial Service will be held at Beth Eden Lutheran. A private graveside service will be held at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
