He was born in Bristol, Texas, outside of Dallas, on January 7, 1929 to parents Justus Hamilton Thompson and Claudia Mae Thompson. He grew up in Bristol, Texas and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas when he was 12 years old. His early hobbies were racing cars and flying airplanes. He worked for a Dodge dealership at 16 where he unloaded automobiles from railcars and was learning his mechanical skills. At 19, he went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and moved to St. Louis. In 1952, at age 23, he went to work for Humble where he spent most of his life in the oil and gas industry. He retired in Refugio from Exxon in 1986. After retirement, he enjoyed his cows and loved watching the grandkids play sports.
Ed was a member of the Masons for 70+ years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James Bradley Thompson (WWII). Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Vada Thompson, a daughter, Melissa Ann Goodwin, his son, Bradley Roland Thompson and wife Kristie, 3 grandchildren, Leah Nicole Spivey (Reid), Kody Ryan Thompson (Hailey) and Casey Bryan Thompson. Ed also leaves behind 2 great grandchildren, Dawson Reid Spivey and Sawyer Russell Spivey along with his sister Patsy Stovall of Overton, Texas. Survivors also include many beloved nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Earthman Baytown Funeral home, 3919 Garth Rd., Baytown, Texas 77521, on Friday, March 26, 2021 at 1PM with a visitation 1 hour prior. Burial will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Fwy. Houston, Texas 77079.
