David Brown Read went to be with the Lord, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, May 15, at his home in San Angelo, Texas.

David was born on Feb. 2, 1938, in Henderson, Texas, to Shelby and Aleen Read.

Family and friends visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, at Johnson's Funeral Home. His service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, at the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd, 3355 W. Beauregard Ave. Interment will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

David grew up in Ackerly, Texas, where his family had a cotton farm and built cotton gins in many parts of West Texas with his grandfather, Andy Brown, including the Mereta Gin. David also worked in oil and gas development with his father. The family moved to Big Spring when David began high school, and he graduated from Big Spring High School in 1955. He attended Baylor University and received both his BA and BBA in 1959. He later went back to Baylor and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1970 and was in the private practice of law to the present. He also served as Judge, Tom Green County Court-at-Law.

He served at 21 years of age in the 57th State Legislature as a representative from Howard County. After that he worked in several avenues of business. He was manager of the Brown Cotton Warehouse in Hoban, Texas, (Pecos) and a partner in the Brown & Read Cotton Company. He also owned and managed his 590-acre cotton farm.

David became executive secretary of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association in 1963 and worked in mortgage banking at the 1st National Bank of San Angelo from 1964-1968.

He was dedicated to his community and his family. He was a past president of the San Angelo Jaycees and was nominated for Outstanding President of the National Chapter and the Organization, was nominated for the Freedom Foundation Award; a former board member of the West Texas Boys Ranch; a member of the NRA; a guest speaker at many organizations including Rotary, Lions, Jaycees and Concho Valley Republican Women; a member of the National and State Republican Parties; and a charter member of the Pachyderm Club of San Angelo and an associate member of the Concho Valley Republican Women. He is a Baylor alumnus and a member of the State Bar Association.

David loved Jesus. He was a charter member of Southland Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. He served on the steering committee for the Jay Strack Crusade. He was a very active member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, having served on the vestry, the evangelism and stewardship committees. He was chairman of the Lenten "Outstanding Guest Speaker" series. He has served as rector for many Cursillos. He was a member of the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd and also attended Victory Christian Center and Christ Church — San Angelo, Anglican.

David never met a stranger and was known to uplift others and give glory to Christ by the phrase, "You are blessed and highly favored of God."

David is survived by his wife, Teddye Brown Handley Read. They were married on July 24, 1992. He is also survived by his son, Andrew D. Read; and stepsons George Handley and wife Julie of Grand Prairie, and John Handley and wife Kathryn of Midland; his sister, Mary Winterrowd, and her husband, Dennis, of Bandera; his nephew, Lance Winterrowd, and his wife, Mary, of San Antonio, and their children, Faith, Zachary and Matthew; his niece, Julie Quade, and husband Steven of San Angelo, and their children, Aaron and Austin; his beloved father-In-law, Ted Brown of Breckenridge; his sister-in-law, BJ Boyd, and her husband, David, of Breckenridge; BJ's daughter, Michelle McNabb, and her family; her husband's children, Robbie Boyd, Laquita Perez and Davita Wilsher; his brother-in-law, John Brown, and his wife, Sue, of Breckenridge, and their children, Bill Ed and Ricky and their families, and Mary Ellen; his brother-in-law, Randy Brown and his wife, Mildred, of Breckenridge, and their children and families, Trevor Brown, Keith Brown, Bobby Heflin, Anna and Malinda Heflin; and goddaughter Anna Fuson; and numerous other nephews and nieces.

Pallbearers will be Layne Turner, Glenn Polhemus, Steve Bodine, John Childers, Ralph Holloway and Chuck Burtch.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, or a church or charity of your choice.
