Darrell Johnson

October 30, 1949 - March 12, 2021

Grass Valley, California -
Though born in Taft, California, Darrell Johnson grew up in Fresno, graduated from McClane High School and then the University of California, Fresno.

For the last twenty-one years he and his wife, Cheryl, have made Grass Valley their home. Anyone who met Darrell knew he had a zest for life; he loved to ski, sail, golf, play piano, dance and, later in life, took up fly fishing and boating on the Yuba River.

Darrell worked for PG&E for forty years, starting out as a pump tester but quickly moving into management positions, ending his career as a service planning supervisor of northern California. At his retirement party, people spoke with respect and love about his legacy. With his signature positive attitude and kindness, Darrell delighted in mentoring employees, developing teamwork, and praising the contributions of others.

Thirteen years ago, Darrell had a double lung transplant and created yet another legacy. He met his medical challenges with rare courage and grace, inspiring family, friends, and many health care professionals. No matter what difficult issues he was facing, he took a keen interest in other people, and continued to live his life with humor, kindness, and an innate dignity and courtesy. Darrell will be deeply missed by the many people who cherish the impact he made on their lives.
He is survived by his loving wife Cheryl, his mother Jeri Johnson, and several beloved aunts and uncles. He also leaves behind his second family through marriage: Sandi and Kerry South, Rick Davis, Victoria Fridley, and his nephew, Daniel.

In keeping with Darrell's wishes, a memorial service will not be held, but for those who would like to make a donation in honor of his memory, please consider supporting UCSF's important work on lung transplants or cancer research (makeagift.ucsf.edu).
