CAPTAIN W. F. COATES

Well Known Citizen And Former Railroad Man Dies After Long Illness

Captain William Franklin Coates, former railroad man and resident of Fredericksburg for many years, died at his home in the lower part of the city Thursday night following an indisposition of nearly two years during which time he has been partially incapacitated for work. Captain Coates however, had recently been out on the streets and his final illness was short. He was 64 years of age.

Captain Coates was a native of Virginia and came here from Caroline County. He had been engaged in railorad (sic) work most of his life and was for a time employed in several capacities by the R., F. & P. R. R. and for a longer period by the P. F. & P. R. R., which company he served as conductor of the train operated between this city and Orange. Captain Coates was well known in Fredericksburg and in the section served by the railroad.

About twelve years ago, after a long period in the service of the company, he was compelled to give up his duties and at the time of his death was connected with a wholesale grocery company. He was connected in an official capacity with the Royal Arcanum.

Captain Coates had for many years been an active member of Trinity Episcopal church and was a member of the church vestry. He also was closely connected with the church school. He is survived by one son, Franklin Coates, of this city, and several brothers, all of whom are now living in the West.

Funeral services from Trinity Episcopal church Saturday evening at 5:30 o'clock and interment in the City Cemetery, with services by the rector, Rev. Charles W. Sheerin, and members of the vestry serving as pallbearers.
His date of birth is an estimate based on federal census records. He was 6 years old in 1860.
