Clarence Evans, Sr. was born on December 11, 1931 in Houston, Texas. He was the only child born to Hansel and Eddie Lee Evans.
Clarence Evans graduated from George Washington Carver High School. He then attended Texas Southern University (TSU) School of Pharmacy from September 1950 to June 1954. With dedication and determination, he completed the five-year program within four years. During his time at TSU he pledged into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Beta Upsilon Chapter Spring of 1953.
Clarence married his sweetheart Betty Jean Flakes. They both were members of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor F.N. Williams, Sr. To this blessed union was born two sons: Clarence Jr. and Larry B.; and two daughters: Eva Jean and Donna Leah. The two of them enjoyed a loving and lengthy marriage that was marked by divine favor and commitment to family for over 64 years. Betty preceded him in death on July 23, 2018.
Clarence served his country and was a pharmacist in the U.S. Army. Mr. Evans was also the first African American to work as a pharmacist at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He was the first African American to work as a pharmacist surveyor/ inspector in the Texas Department of Human Services long term care unit. He opened Peter Lane Pharmacy in Dallas, Texas in 1956 which was the first pharmacy in Dallas to be opened by an African American. He then went on to open Evans Eastex Pharmacy in Houston, Texas in 1962 and built it from the ground up. Mr. Evans retired in November 2000. He was an active member in his community and respected by many. He was a husband to Betty Jean Evans and a father to Clarence Evans Jr., Eva Evans, Larry Evans, and Donna Evans. Three of his children attended Texas Southern University.
He leaves to cherish his memories: her children: Eva Ford (Terrance); Larry B. Evans (Fonda); and Donna L. Evans. Her grandchildren: Clarence Evans III (Kenya), Christopher Shawn Evans, Chad Evans, Terrance D. Ford (Jennifer), Marquishi Threats (Bradley), Joshawa Ford, Brandon Evans (Nicole), Amber Evans, Mia Evans, Moya Evans and seventeen great grandchildren including his new little side kick Kyler Threats. She also leaves his sister-in-laws: Annie Mae Flakes and Gladys Flakes. A host of nephews, cousins and friends.
