David Randolph "Ran" Young, beloved father and husband transitioned March 5, 2021 surrounded by loved ones at his home. His presence will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by many.

The sun rose and the world welcomed Ran on March 31, 1936 to Naomi and James Young in the neighborhood of Almagro. This day in Danville, Virginia became a little brighter! Our earliest memories of him were being a happy young boy in a large family with 5 brothers and 8 sisters.

Ran answered to the names of Randolph, Dave, Randolph, David and Dad. He also answered to the name of faithful Christian. He professed his love for Jesus Christ and was baptized in a nearby creek and joined the Mt. Sinai Glorious Church of God in Danville, Virginia. This was just the beginning of him expressing his love for God.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy! His personality has been described as a character, joker, a teaser, and one who never met a stranger. Overall, he loved his family deeply and liked to surprise them with special treats, especially clothes from Rayless. He made his friends and family laugh, took them fishing, picked lemons for them, gave the boys haircuts, and really liked to cook for them! He even made his family a cake that he forgot to add the sugar and they at it without any complaints. In addition, he introduced his family to the Italian food of spaghetti and even taught Donna how to make smothered rabbit and gravy over rice. Ran seldom ate fast food because he loved to eat and prepare home-cooked food.

Ran perfected his cooking as a cook in the Air Force while stationed in Alaska and Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He inspired both of his sons-David and Evan to have a love for cooking. After he left military service, he decided to expand his cooking to such delicacies as duck and deer.

His hobbies included entertaining, gardening, playing cards, board games, making homemade wine, and yard work. In his earlier years, he listened to Jazz but in later years gravitated to Gospel music. Ran enjoyed watching baseball and football. However, he did not have a favorite sports team.

He was married to Mary Elizabeth Peavy on June 14, 1956 and they produced two handsome sons, David Jr. and Evan. Later he met and married Jean Rose. Ran tied the knot again and was married to Jean Rose on May 31, 1974 and resided in Newark, New Jersey.

After many years of living in New Jersey, Ran and Jean retired and moved to Newport News, Virginia. They joined the New Beech Grove Baptist Church and became active servants in ministry. He served on the Missionary Society, Mature Adult Ministry, and volunteered at the church's Food Bank. They lived in a close-knit community and often collaborated with his neighbors on outdoor projects, holiday celebrations, and mutual care for each other.
Throughout his life, he had an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those around him.

Predeceased by his wife, Jean Young; son David Young Jr; and 6 siblings James Edward Young Jr, Shirley Laura Hairston, Loretta Naomi Parker, Aquila Ann Culver and Douglas Ray Young.

Survived by his son, Evan (Donna); daughter-in-law, Paula; grandsons, Corneil, Ian, Sean and Joaquim; 6 great grandchildren; siblings, Freddie Young, Nathan (Delores) Young, Almeda Horton, Louise Brandon, Carolyn Kates, Bernice (Gene) Ferguson and Cynthia Young; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Ran died a day after the memorial service of his beloved wife, Jean.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the New Beech Grove Baptist Church Food Bank where they both volunteered.

Dave's everlasting love for Jesus Christ, his compassion for humanity, and the sharing of his love will be dearly missed by everyone along with his delicious cooking enjoyed by all!

Funeral services will be held March 22, 2021, at New Beech Grove Baptist Church, 351 Beechmont Dr., Newport News VA 23608. This will be a restricted to family only, however all are invited to participate via livestream on the New Beech Grove website, www.newbeechgrove.org
