Norfolk, VA was Shirley’s home all of her life. Upon graduation from Granby High School in 1952, she began working as a secretary at the Norfolk Naval Base, followed by a job with Norfolk Public Schools Easton Elementary as a Teacher’s Assistant. As a child and young adult, Shirley was an active member of Lafayette Presbyterian Church. Later in life, she became a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Norfolk.
Shirley’s greatest joy in life was taking care of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, William Earl Henley, Jr., her parents, and her sister, Doris Owens Carlson. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Cynthia Henley Albertson and Shawn Henley Drew; son-in-law Gary Albertson, grandson Nick Albertson, as well as her brother Claude M. Owens, Jr. sister-in-law Joan Owens, aunt Catherine Sawyer, several nieces, and her nephew. She will also be missed by the family’s pets: Honey, Biscuit, Gracie, Ella, and Oreo.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, or Critters 4 U Rescue Inc. A huge debt of gratitude is extended to the staff of Saber Villages of Rosemont Assisted Living in Va. Beach and Kindred Hospice for the care, love, and kindness shown over the past nine years.
