There is much controversy surrounding the life of Mary Waller, daughter of Dr. John Waller and his wife Mary Pomfrett of Bucks County, England. Parish records for Newport Pagnell Parish show her birth on May 23, 1674. After that her life remains a mystery.

Most researchers believe she, like her younger brother John Waller Jr., traveled to Virginia in her early 20's, where she met Edward Herndon, from a prominent Virginia family in St Stephen's Parish, New Kent County. Edward's father was born in England and traveled with his father to Virginia between 1673 and 1674.

Their first child, born about 1700 in King and Queen County, was named John Herndon, presumably after her father Dr. John Waller. It was customary in those times to name the first male child after their maternal grandfather. Coincidentally, Mary's brother John Waller, who like her came first to King and Queen County, but now lived nearby in Spotsylvania County, also married a woman from a well established Virginia family, and their first born (1699) was named Mary, presumably after her maternal grandmother Mary Pomfrett.

Mary and Edward had at least eight more children between 1700 and 1716.

Little is known about Mary after that. It is believed that she died before 1723 as in that year Edward fathered a child with Mary Leftwich, who was at that time between 14 and 15 years of age. The child was named Esther Herndon.
