Mike's life began on October 29, 1958, in Newton. He was the son of Harold and Joan (Klein) Bowers, Jr. Mike was a graduate of Garden City High School, and after graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 14 years. He reached the rank of Petty Officer, 1st Class. Mike sailed around the world seven times aboard the USS Kitty Hawk and the USS Point Defiance. Mike returned to Kansas and, because of his love of the outdoors, he worked at several private colleges as a grounds superintendent. Mike retired in 2018 and enjoyed playing golf, mowing at home, and trying to keep his wife's clutter minimized. Mike was united in marriage to Evelyn Colon in Perth Amboy, NJ, and later married again to wife Laura Unruh on February 14, 1998, in McPherson. Mike is survived by his wife Laura of Bennington; children Johnathon (Nicky) Bowers of McPherson, Nicole Bowers of Winter Springs, FL, Will Unruh of Burlington, MA, and Jenny (Cory) Saylor of Bennington; grandsons Jameson Bowers and Felix Bowers of McPherson; sister Susan (Jerry) Soldner of Salina, KS, brother Jock (Paula) Bowers of McPherson, brother in law David (Teresa) Secord of Galva, KS, and sister in law Paula Piland of Canton, KS, his loving companion, Sam the dog, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mike passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 20, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents. Mike's family will gather with friends on Thursday, March 25, from 12-2 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion, where his funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. led by Troy and Vernon Bowers. He will be laid to rest in Grant Cemetery with Navy honors following the service. Memorial contributions in Mike's name may be directed to Laura Bowers.
