Jessie Belle Petermann Leonard, born April 3, 1924, in Tallahassee, Florida, to Charles and Cora Petermann, died peacefully at her home in Decatur, Alabama, where she resided the last 61 years of her life, on October 24, 2020.

She was loved and will be dearly missed. She was a very generous woman who never met a stranger and who supported her family, friends and many charities.

At 16 she entered Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) and graduated with a BS in Home Economics as a dietitian. She later earned a Master of Education. She retired from the Decatur City Schools as a second-grade teacher, a job she loved. She loved to travel, read, work crosswords and enjoy time with family and friends. She was an avid genealogist and a long-time member and often officer of many organizations in which she enjoyed many friendships and worked tirelessly with and for: Daughters of the American Revolution, Dames and Barons of the Magna Charta, Daughters of the American Colonists, and Colonial Dames.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Stephen V. Leonard and her brother J. Guerry Petermann.

She leaves behind four children, Kathy Petersen (Phil) of Athens, Nancy Holzwanger of Huntsville, Cindy Montgomery (Tom) of Cullman, and Guerry Leonard of Decatur, and sister Lorene Cosentino of Coral Springs. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Bendt Petersen of Mobile, Stephen Petersen (Nancy) of Decatur, Bryan Holzwanger (Suzanne) of Dallas, Edward Holzwanger (Brinkley) of D.C., Daniel Montgomery of Decatur, and James and Sarah Montgomery of Cullman. She leaves ten great grandchildren.

Due to Covid a memorial service will be held at a later date.
Any remembrances may be made to the Salvation Army.
