Cecil T. Hunter
February 5, 1925 - March 18, 2021

Cecil Thomas Hunter entered eternal rest on Wednesday, March 17, 2021. He was born in Greenup, Ky and spent his childhood years in Huntington, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Gloria James Hunter, son, Cecil Hunter Jr. and his parents, Charles and Helen Hunter.

Following his service in the Army, he attended Meharry Medical School in Nashville, TN to pursue dental technology. He later attended Florida A&M University where he earned a degree in Education.

Seeking to provide equitable educational opportunities for all played a consistent role throughout his public service, including his role as an educator. He served more than three decades as a local schoolteacher, serving Goulding Elementary, Brownsville Middle School and Blount Middle School communities.

Part of Cecil’s legacy in public service is inextricably linked with that of his beloved wife, Gloria’s, legacy. It was not uncommon to see Cecil and Gloria volunteering around town for various functions, lending their time to support the community they loved. He was a loving spouse, and Gloria was his partner in love and life. For example, he and Gloria met with then Archbishop Joseph Toolen (around 1964) of the Archdiocese of Mobile, to express their concern for the importance of integrating Pensacola Catholic High. They advocated to provide African American parents the opportunity for their children to continue a catholic education at the secondary level. As a result, the Catholic High School was later integrated and Charlene, Roderick, Rosalind and Gloria attended and graduated Catholic HighSchool.

Cecil’s life was always centered primarily around family, community service, and most importantly, his Catholic faith. To his children, he was a loving and caring father, who instilled strong values, family relationships, and a duty to give back to the community.

He is survived by children, Mildred Hunter (Chicago), Charlene Hunter James (Andrew), Gloria Hunter Robinson (Lynn), Rosalind Hunter Levy, Roderick Hunter (D’Audrey). Grandchildren, Dr Roderick Hunter (Plano, TX), Rashunda Hunter (Plano, TX), Isaac Levy, (Atlanta, GA), Dr. Charlene-Mary James Piper (Ronnie) Houston, TX, Rivka Levy (Atlanta, GA), Jeffrey Robinson((Amber) Fayetteville, NC, Alexander Robinson (Mitchellville). Great-grandchildren, Elijah Phillips, Jacob Levy, Jeffrey Robinson Jr., Joy Robinson, and Tristan Dawkins-Levy, Brother, Edward Scott (Hillcrest Heights, Md) and a host of other relatives.
