Born in Oxford, Connecticut, Gideon married Susanna Pitcher in 1804 in Oxford, moving west around 1815 to Ohio. They had eight children, including his son Burr Riggs, who became quite involved in the Mormon movement. He eventually settled in Maysville near his daughter, Adaline.
