Betty Shepherd Butler, 89, of Blairsville, Ga. made her transition on February 16, 2021. She was born June 5, 1931 in Atlanta, GA to Col. Earl Lenward Shepherd and Linda Grubbs Shepherd. As a “military brat” she traveled and lived many places. She was in the first coed graduating class of the former Grady High School in Atlanta, and attended nursing school at St. Joseph’s in Atlanta.

While working at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Betty met her husband, pharmacist Joseph B. Butler, with whom she shared two daughters. One of her cherished employments and lifelong friendships was with the renowned children’s orthopedic surgeon, Dr. J. Hiram Kite, who was affiliated with Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta. She was a medical transcriptionist to Drs. Williams, Harbour, and Harley and later was office manager for Drs. Dellinger and Israel in Smyrna, Ga.

Betty relocated to Aurora, Colo. to become one of the first female medical sales representatives with John Bryant, Inc. covering nine Rocky Mountain states. Later she transferred to Orlando, Fla. where she was a medical sales rep for the J. T. Posey Company. She moved back to Smyrna and retired from an office manager position with Jim Wilson & Associates at Cumberland Mall in Atlanta. After retirement she moved to the mountain town she fell in love with at age nine, Blairsville, Ga.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her former husband, her brother Robert L. Shepherd, her daughter Cindi Butler (Patrick) Wheatley, and her niece Susan Shepherd (Chris) McNutt. She is survived by her daughter Terri Butler (Jerry) Johnson of Hiram, Ga. and granddaughter Caryn Stamey (Scott) Mills of Douglasville, Ga.
