Henry Miller Steele, 89, died peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2017.

He was born April 9, 1927, in Pierre, South Dakota. He graduated from Neosho (Missouri) High School in 1944, and then served 2 ½ years in the army. He was sent to the Pacific as an infantry replacement and was assigned as a typist to General MacArthur’s headquarters. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1949 and received his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1958. He worked for IBM for 35 years holding various sales, technical, and management positions, all in a marketing capacity. He taught 3 years in the Department of Economics at Indiana University while a graduate student there, and served 3 years on the faculty of the School of Business at the University of Missouri. After retiring from IBM in 1991, he was an adjunct professor of economics for 18 years in the School of Business at Meredith College.

Mr. Steele was a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church. He served on the diaconate and chaired the Library Committee for three years. He had a great appreciation for the stimulation and support of the members of the Theological Forum class. He was a member of the advisory council of the Salvation Army for three years. For fourteen years he served on the Raleigh Rescue Mission board and the board of the Rescue Mission Foundation. He was a member of the Raleigh Civitan Club and the Acacia Masonic Lodge of Columbia, Missouri. He enjoyed through the years extensive travel related to his work, and later simply for pleasure. In his years of retirement he also found great pleasure in his association with his duplicate bridge players, and working with his friends on activities of the Raleigh Civitan Club.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Matthews Steele, in 1983. He remarried in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Jane Street Steele; daughter Susan Steele and her husband Tim Saito of Houston, Texas; son Russell Steele and his wife Margie, of Austin, Texas; son John Steele and his fiancée Beverley Blau of Los Angeles, California; granddaughter Lauren Beck and her husband Randy, of Akron, Ohio; grandson Kyle Steele of Norman, Oklahoma; stepson John Liles and his wife Mary Beth of Rensselaer, New York; stepdaughter Mary Liles of Raleigh, North Carolina, and numerous nieces and nephews.
