Ernest "Ernie" Cunningham
Ernest "Ernie" Cunningham passed away on Wednesday, September 24th at the age of 87. Ernie attended Eureka City Schools and graduated from Eureka High School in 1938, where he excelled in athletics. Jay Willard, former Eureka High School coach, was instrumental in his being awarded a basketball scholarship at Oregon State University. Ernie left Oregon State after the attack on Pearl Harbor during WWII and enlisted in the Navy, where he became a Naval Flight Instructor.

Following his naval service, Ernie went to Alaska and as a result of his Navy float plane training was hired as a bush pilot for a local Alaska fish cannery.

He returned to Humboldt County and completed his education at Humboldt State College, graduating in 1949.

Ernie was hired in 1955 as the first athletic coach at St. Bernard High School, where he coached football, baseball, basketball and track. After his tenure as a coach at Arcata High School, Ernie completed his educational career as an administrator in the Eureka City Schools.

He was a member of the Eureka Elks Lodge #652 and the Native Sons of the Golden West, Parlor # 14.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Suzanne Adelle; his parents, Flurence and Verda Cunningham; his brothers, Bill and Walter Cunningham; and sisters, Jane, Jean and Genevieve.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Dawn; daughter, Katy Cunningham; son, Bill Cunningham and wife Susan; grandson, Wesley Cunningham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of his Life will be held at the Elk Lodge in Eureka on Tuesday, September 30th at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers a contribution can be made to the Ernie Cunningham scholarship fund at St. Bernard High School, in care of the Humboldt Area Foundation, P.O. Box 99, Bayside, CA 95521.
