John ALSUP was born abt 1740 in Goochland County, Virginia. John died in Sumner County, Tennessee, aft 1813.

On 23 Jun 1762 when John was 22, he married Jurya POTTER in Saint James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia. Born in 1743 in Goochland County, Virginia. Jurya died in Kentucky in 1809; she was 66.

They had the following children:

iv. Frances "Fanny". Born on 28 Oct 1766 in Goochland County, Virginia. On 16 Aug 1790 when Frances "Fanny" was 23, she married Henry DAY in Montgomery County, Virginia.

vi. Joseph. Born in 1770 in Botetourt County, Virginia.
vii. Catherine "Caty" (~1772-)
viii. David (~1773-1841)
ix. Mary. Born abt 1776 in Botetourt County, Virginia. Mary married WOODARD.

In 1755, John was serving in the First Virginia Regiment under the command of Col. George Washington. He served in the French and Indian Wars (1754-1763), the Cherokee Expedition (1760), and the Battle of Point Pleasant, which has been recognized as the first battle of the Revolution. HIs marriage to Jurya Potter on 23 June, 1762 was recorded in the Douglas Register of Rev. Wm. Douglas of the St. James Northam Parish, Dover Church, Goochland Co., Va. They had 12 children to add to three he had with a first, unknown, wife.

John was discharged from his Regiment in May 1780, while living in Montgomery County. He moved
with his family from his land on New River in Buckeye Bottom to Lincoln Co., KY in 1799. In 1800, his land on the Cumberland River was included in the new Knox County, and later became part of Whitley County where many of his descendants still reside.

John's son David had remained in Russell County Va. when the family moved to Kentucky. He married Martha Grant in about 1800 and had five children. They moved to Sumner Co., TN, where he died in 1842.

John 1st marriage and children info as well as earlier genertions came from the Alsop's tables of Steve Alsip who lives in Whitley County, Ky.

In Bk B. pg 190 Montgomery Co., Va. John Alsup withdraws 50 acres of Bear
Spring and enters the same on Meadow Branch and on the north side of Buckeye
Survey, to begin about 40 poles above Nelabin? on the same for quantity.

In 1778 in Montgomery Co., Va Thomas Alsop (believed to be John's brother) was
listed by court records as being in the Continental Service and his wife Mary
and two children were aurthorized ..... 15 lbs of grain while he was away
fighting. In 1781 John was living in Wrights Valley in Mongtomery Co., Va. on
124 acres of land. John was in the Virginia Regiment of his area and
discharged in May 1780 commanded by Col. Adam Stephen. John Alsop was living
in 1785 on 45 acres on Meador Branch of New River in the same county. From
1787-1789 he had land at Buckeye Mountain in same county also. This was close to Walkers Creek and Bear Spring. John Alsop and sons William and Joseph are listed in 1790 in Montgomery Co., Va. as owning farms and being on the tax lists. John was at fork of Walker and Wolf Creeks while his sons were on Clear? Fork of Wolf's Creek at the head of Bluestone. This ran off the Clinch
River at Abbs and Wrights Valleys. Robert Alsop in 1781 moved from this area
to North Carolina. He was possibly another brother of John. By 1793 John and
wife Julya had moved to Wythe Co., Va. This came from the tax list of that
year which also listed a son Joseph.
From the "Calendar of Virginia State Papers" Vol. VI, Page 601 the petition
from the people of the Southwestern frontier was sent to the House of General
Assembly of Virginia asking for contingence of then existing system of defense
and mentioning examples of hostile action of the Indians. One example said
that on April 8, 1793 John Alsop was shot through the shoulder not far from his
own house. Among the signees of this petition were John Sr., John Jr., and
David Alsup.
