Gary Thomson, age 85, of Modesto, IL. died Wednesday afternoon (March 17, 2021) at his residence.
He was born September 9, 1935, in Waverly, IL. son of late Orel E. and Thelma Ruth (Bryan) Thomson.
He married Judith Ann Prather on January 26, 1966, in Jacksonville, IL. and she preceded him in death on January 7, 2018.
Surviving are his children, Bryan Thomson (Tiffany) of Modesto, IL. and Amy Gibbs (Doug) of Benton, IL; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by parents; wife; one grandchild; and a sister Joan Thomson.
Gary graduated from Waverly High School and he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from the University of Illinois. He excelled in athletics at Waverly High School holding several scoring records in basketball, two of which have since been broken, but he still holds the single-game scoring record of 47 points. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He returned to start a family farm with his father and continued to farm with his son until the time of his death. Gary was a member of Northwestern Rescue Squad for many years. Gary enjoyed quail hunting, fishing in Alaska in the summer, and Florida in the winter with Judy. Gary also enjoyed trapping for many years and tanning hides. He hand sewed three coyote fur coats for Judy, Amy, and Tiffany.
The family will hold private services at a later date.
