Elfreda Loraine Briscoe, 89, of Johnston City went to be with her Lord and Savior at 7:22 a.m., Thursday, March 18, 2021 at Herrin Hospital.
Elfreda was born January 31, 1932 in Bloomington to Royal Robert and Dorothy Elizabeth (Quinn) Handley. She was united in marriage to James Robert Briscoe on August 6, 1949 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on December 9, 2000.
Elfreda enjoyed baking and made her talent a career for many years. She worked at Momma's Cookie Factory in Chicago and Larry's House of Cakes as a baker.
Elfreda had the gift of hospitality and giving. She made everyone feel welcome in her home. She opened her doors to 10 foster children.
Elfreda loved taking pictures of her family, whom she dearly loved. She enjoyed crocheting and was a seamstress. She also enjoyed painting.
Elfreda is survived by her five children, Edie (Bruce) of Flora, James of Benton, Eric (Rhonda) of Whiteash, Helen (Tony) of Louisville, KY. and Julie (Richard) of Clay City; grandchildren; great grandchildren; sister, Rosemary of Ottumwa, IA; brother, Robert of Ames, IA. She is also survived by many great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Briscoe; parents, Royal & Dorothy Hanley; son, Michael Briscoe; grandson, Trevor Howell; great-granddaughter, Ashelee Horsley; siblings, Roy Handley, Joyce Vaughn, Robert Handley, Dorris Barksdale and Raymond Handley.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City.
Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., on Monday, March 22, 2021 at the funeral home.
