Jackie Melvin Johnson, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2021. He was 87. Jackie was born on October 8, 1933 in Cheswold to the late Franklin and Mary Johnson.
Jackie grew up in the Cheswold area. He loved playing baseball and played for the Cheswold Tigers and also played while he was overseas serving with the Army during the Korean War. Jackie worked for over 40years with George & Lynch as a roller operator. Jackie enjoyed cooking, gardening and watching horse racing and also loved to support his favorite teams, the LA Dodgers and LA Rams.
In addition to his parents, Jackie is preceded in death by his wife Helen (Sammons) Johnson, brothers, Jimmy and Woody, sisters, Winona, Joan, Dottie, Anna B, Mary Virginia and godson Donnie Johnson.
Jackie is survived by his children Jackie Jr (Debbie), Peggy Ridgeway (Chris), Frank (Susie) and Gregory, all of Dover; sister, Sandra Coker of Dover; and sister in law Connie Johnson. 11 grandchildren, Gordon(Katie), Jennifer, Billy (Carrie), Megan (Nick), Christopher (Wendy), Shawn(Mandy), Frankie, Travis (Jenitza), Nicky (Bobby), Daniel (Britani) and Gregory Jr., 23 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, god daughter Tammy Mosley and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Services will be held on Friday, March 26, 2021 at 2 pm at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd (Rt. 10), Dover. Friends may call an hour prior. Interment will follow at Immanuel Union United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Immanuel Union United Methodist Church.
