Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen

Mr. Gau was employed at the former Dubuque Packing Company for 30 years. He also worked part-time roofing many homes in Dubuque with his brother, Wally.
He was born on Feb. 13, 1925, in Dubuque, son of Edward and Freda (Kurtz) Gau. He married Catherine Goff on April 24, 1948, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church; she preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 2005.
He loved playing cards with family and friends. He especially enjoyed the many Saturday nights in his younger years, playing euchre at Meyer's Tap with Catherine.
He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker parish.
Surviving are his five children, Peggy (Doug Page) Demkier, Ed (Donna) Gau, and Chris (Tina) Gau, all of Dubuque, John (Debbie) Gau, of Peosta, Iowa, and Gene Gau, of Davenport, Iowa; nine grandchildren, B.J. (Jen) Demkier, Amy Dzaboff (special friend, Jamie Butteris), Joe, Molly, Tim, Taylor, Riley, Josh and Luke Gau; five great-grandchildren, Olivia, William and Anna Demkier, and Courtney and Chelsey Dzaboff; a brother, Walter (Ande) Gau, of Dubuque; and a sister, Lil (Carl) Chandler, of Arizona.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susie; and a sister, Esther Hogan.
