Mrs. Carolyn H. Myers passed away peacefully at her home in Lawrenceville, Georgia, on March 16th after a courageous fight against declining health. Born in Albany, Georgia, Carolyn and her younger sister Dotty grew up in Columbus, Georgia, where her father had a long career as a dentist and her mother was a high school teacher. A graduate of Columbus High School, she went on to attend Mary Washington College and later graduated from Temple University as a dental hygienist. Naval air base assignments for her late husband, Harold E. Gray, took her away from the area for a number of years but after his death in Vietnam she returned home with her children and lived in Columbus. There she met and married Marvin Myers and they raised their combined family of four children in Columbus and later in Seale, Alabama.

Carolyn’s strong Christian faith combined with her passion for books help lead them to start the Mustard Seed Christian Bookstore in Columbus which was later sold and continued for decades to be a successful local retailer. After moving to the Duluth/Lawrenceville area in the early 80’s, Carolyn returned to bookselling and worked for many years until retirement at the Family Christian Bookstore in Duluth. Her home was always open to friends and hosted countless Bible studies and she also loved gardening and long talks with anyone who would sit a while on her beloved back porch. A joy and surprise in her late 70’s was reuniting with her ex-husband, Marvin, and the two were like teenagers in love giving hope that anything is possible.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. J.M. Hawley, Dorothy Young Hawley, husbands Harold Gray and Marvin Myers, grandson Benjamin Myers, brother-in-law Colon Folk, and son-in-law Trip Coombs. She is survived and dearly missed by her sister Dotty Folk, children Scott Myers, Tracy Coombs, Becky (Frank) Kremer and Marshall (Melanie) Myers, granddaughters Shelby Myers and Anna Kremer and grandsons Jeremy, Andrew, Zachary, Stephen and Matthew Myers along with her extended family and beloved family friends. Carolyn, or Nana, loved to help others in practical ways and that was how she received love too - so it’s no surprise she waited until her back porch was cleaned up for the season until she peacefully slipped away.

Viewing and visitation will be held at Bill Head Funeral Home in Duluth, 3088 Highway 120, on Monday the 22nd of March after 4pm with a service at 6pm. Please wear a mask if attending in person. The service is limited to 50 people so after family are seated we welcome any others who wish to join us as we celebrate Carolyn with stories and remembrances. Please contact the family if you’d like to share or send a message for us to read during the service You can also join via livestream or watch later at the link provided. Carolyn will be laid to rest in Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus. Flowers will be joyfully received or honor Carolyn by contributing to your favorite charity – especially those who support families in need.
