John Rudolph Bray
NOVEMBER 13, 1929 – MARCH 14, 2021

John Rudolph Bray passed away at his home on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at the age of 91. He was born to John Douglas Bray and Rachael Kirkland Bray on November 13, 1929 in Andalusia, Al. He spent his early years in Andalusia where he met his loving wife, Quinlyn. They shared 66 beautiful years together and raised three children.

Rudy attended Auburn University until the Korean War called him away. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he taught electronics and radar before being stationed on an island off the coast of North Korea. Upon his return he worked for Chemstrand and then RCA space program research in Cape Canaveral. Longing to finish college, he returned to Auburn and earned his BS degree in Electrical Engineering. Following his graduation he returned to work for Chemstrand/Monsanto. His 25 year career with Monsanto included countless research and design projects as well as 13 patents to his credit. He retired from Monsanto in 1985.

Rudy founded Vertec, Inc. with his son, Ronald in 1981. Vertec is a technical development and manufacturing company. Rudy developed a wide range of products including warning sensors for helicopter navigation, law surveillance equipment, water purification systems, all-terrain wheel chairs, de-icers for the airline industry, and face shields to protect teachers and healthcare workers from COVID. He developed one of the first remote monitoring systems to transmit medical data over the phone from cardiac patients with pace makers to their doctors.

Rudy was one of the founding members of Hadji Shrine Temple and served as Potentate in 1975. He used his pilot skills to fly children who were burned to Shriner Hospitals for treatment. He loved to snow ski, water ski, fly private planes, and play tennis in his earlier years. Rudy enjoyed boating and was an active member of Pensacola Yacht Club. He served on the Engineering Board of Auburn University for several years. He enjoyed listening to music and was always the first one on the dance floor. Above all else, he loved spending time with his family. He had a strong faith in God and was a member of the United Methodist Church.

In the last few years Rudy and Innes Richards became dear companions. From a European trip to numerous boating adventures they have enjoyed life and supported one another. She has a special place in our hearts.

He is preceded in death by his parents John Douglas Bray and Rachael Kirkland Bray and his wife, the love of his life, Quinlyn Bray. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn May, his children Ronald Bray, Dr. John Bray (Annette), and Rena Bray Patton (Dr. Robert) along with 10 grandchildren and 8 great- grandchildren.

Rudy had a deep caring nature and positive attitude throughout his life. His smile, laughter, youthful exuberance, and creativity will be missed by all who knew him.

Rudy will be laid to rest at a private family service at Bayview Memorial Park. There will be a celebration of life in the near future. Date to be announced.

Pallbearers include: Cody Patton, Douglas Bray, Connor Bray, Beau Frierson, Zach Lindemann, Ryan Frazee, and Royce Ingram.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hadji Shrine Temple, Crippled Children’s Fund, 800 W. Nine Mile Rd., Pensacola, Fl 32534 or a charity of your choice.
