Clara N. Smallwood, born on June 1, 1917, into the Chokoloskee family of Getrude and Henry Thompson, graduated from this world into the next July 1, 2012. Her father was from the Thompsons of Key West, FL and her mother was from the Hamiltons of Chokoloskee Island, both pioneer families.
Clara was preceded in graduation of this life by her husband, Ted Smallwood; and her son, Ted R. Smallwood,
She leaves behind her daughter, Sharon and her husband, Max Scott of Indian Harbour Beach, FL; her daughter, Catherine and her husband, Rex Budd of Ellijay, GA; her son, Allen H. Smallwood and his wife, Kathryn of Sparta, NC; daughter-in-law, Marie Smallwood Wills of Mariette, GA. Clara leaves seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Belle House of Tarpon Springs, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
Clara was the wife of Ted Smallwood, son of C.S. "Ted" and Mamie Smallwood, Ted and Clara were married for 55 years. They were born one month apart on Chokoloskee and grew up together in the little island community which consisted of about ten families at that time. It was a simpler life with plenty of fish and wild life. The Smallwood Store was the gathering place for mail and news.
Ted and Clara owned and operated Everglades Small Boat Dock and Western Gateway Motor Court & Trailer Park in Everglades City, FL for 30 years. Ted was well known as a fishing guide and sports fisherman, and Clara for her fly fishing ties. Ted developed a fishing lure, manufactured by Porter Bait Company, now of collectible ranking and extremely rare. The book titled "Florida Lure Makers and their Lures," by Douglas J. Brace, pictures both Ted and Clara with a history of their lures and fishing flies.
Clara is remembered by her children as a loving mother who was always steadfast in her devotion to the things of God and her support in whatever they chose to pursue in life.
There was a celebration of Clara's life at a graveside service on July 5, 2012 in Sparta, NC.
Proverbs 31:10-31 is a fitting summation of her life on this earth and we her family look forward to a great reunion on resurrection morning.
