THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, January 20, 1927, page 1, column 5. "M. M. APPLEGATE. - The funeral services for M. M. Applegate, former Nevada and Story county man, who died at his home at Arlington, Calif., January 6, were held at the Morfoot funeral home on Eighth street, Nevada, Wednesday afternoon, a few hours after the body arrived from the west coast. The services were conducted by Dr. R. M. Shipman, former pastor of the First Methodist church of Nevada, but now of Ames, assisted by Rev. Peter Jacobs, of Cambridge. The music consisted of two songs by C. H. Hall. The pallbearers were C. C. Button and W. W. Finnie, of Nevada; O. F. Strombeck, of Maxwell; G. C. Bullard, Fred Warner and W. E. Hawks, of Cambridge. Interment was in the Nevada cemetery. The services were attended by relatives and many old neighbors and friends. Mr. Applegate was a man held in the highest esteem by all who knew him and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. A man of broad mind and jovial disposition, active in all affairs both of a business and public nature, as long as he was able to "carry on," he naturally acquired a wide circle of acquaintances who sincerely mourn at his untimely death. Marshall Morris Applegate was born at Nevada, Story county, Iowa, August 2, 1858, and passed away at his home at Arlington, Calif., January 6, 1927. He lived near Nevada until he was five years of age, when he moved with his parents to Blairstown, Iowa where he grew to manhood. In 1885 he was united in marriage to Maude C. Bailey. To this union were born four children: Fern, now Mrs. H. N. Elliott, of Waukee, Iowa; A. K. and R. B. Applegate, of Cambridge, and Lulu, now Mrs. A. M. Christy, of Maxwell. His early life was spent at railroading until 1896 when he moved, with his family to Story county, on a farm___ ___ 19_5 when he moved from the farm to Nevada, where he lived until his health failed him in 1919, when he with his wife, went to Santa Ana, Calif., to live, but he gradually grew weaker until death claimed him. Mr. Applegate took his letter from the Methodist Church at Nevada to Arlington, Calif., where he was a member. He was a member of the Nevada Lodge No. __ A. F. & A. M., also a member of the consistory and shrine of Des Moines. Besides his beloved wife and four children, he is survived by three sisters and eleven grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Fanny Fields, of Perry, was present at the funeral. Card of Thanks. - We wish to thank our many friends and neighbors for their kindness, sympathy and beautiful floral offerings at the death of our husband and father.
