Jean Marlene Chase Griffin was born to Glenford & Jessie Chase on August 12, 1932 in Hoquiam, WA and was reunited on February 26, 2021. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of her childhood town in Grays Harbor with her fashionable mother and doting dad during a time when a quarter was sufficient for a bus ride to and from the nearby theater, a movie ticket and pop or candy.
Upon high school graduation, Jean attended St. Peter's Hospital School of Nursing in Olympia, where she graduated and became a Registered Nurse in 1954. While working in Seattle, she met and later married Doyle Griffin in 1958. They lived in San Mateo and Citrus Heights, CA until they moved to San Antonio in 1968. After 2 ½ decades of caring for her family, she renewed her RN certification and worked at Methodist Hospital.
Jean was a nervous but willing party to many adventures traveling throughout the United States and abroad with her husband. She enjoyed any beach with the cool breeze and calming sound of the waves, reminiscent of her childhood experiences on the Harbor. With the lush and beautiful green fields and ease of language, Ireland took top award as her favored destination abroad. Her travels took her to Alaska, Australia, Egypt, Greece, Tahiti, and countless other journeys.
Not only was Jean a woman of strong faith and a patient, kind, loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was also a dear and loyal friend to her ya-yas, with whom she found great delight and camaraderie. She spent years cultivating a deep bond with these special women with whom she adored, and they her. They created cherished ceramics, went on weekend trips, played bridge, shopped, and shared endless laughs.
After several sequential hospitalizations, our beloved wife and mother moved into memory care a week into COVID-19 lockdown. At the most difficult time in her life, she stayed in a place she did not know, with people she had never met. She was tormented by loneliness and the awareness of the progression of dementia. Fortunately, in October she moved to Sodalis Assisted Living, where they "loved her through" the torment, and 3 weeks later she was joined by her husband of 62 years who provided love, companionship, and comfort in her last months.
Beneath the colorful attire and vibrant jewelry, was a quiet, mild-mannered lady with an optimistic outlook on life and of people. She is the good in our lives that we all strive to match. She leaves us a legacy of love and she will live forever in our hearts.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Leighton Chase and Linda McKenna.
She is survived by husband, Doyle Griffin; daughters, Pam Bienek-Harling (Bill), Cheri Griffin, and Teresa Griffin; grandchildren, Chloe (Josh, daughters, Olivia and Isabel), Shawn, Blaine, Chase (Madison, son, Griffin), and Connor; and sister, Betty Humphrey White.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2021, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
