He married Mary McCormick, she preceded him in death.
John grew up on a small farm with his father and dog, Shep. In his teens he entertained at local events and roadhouses playing his much beloved accordion. In WW2 he served in the Navy Seabees and fought in the South Pacific, taking the accordion with him.
John started the Duluth Accordion Center in 1946. In 1953 he moved his school to Fort Wayne and named it Indiana Music Studios. As interest in more contemporary music increased, he added instruction in guitar, piano, organ and band instruments. The school taught hundreds of local children to play and love music until 1969. He added instruments sales and rebranded his company McCormick piano and Organ, Inc. later McCormick Music. The music retailer continued until his retirement in 1989.
After retiring John started a part time vocation as a piano tuner. The Journal Gazette called him "The Piano Man" in a full-page feature article in 2009.
John was an avid traveler, crisscrossing the US in his 30 ft. Airstream travel trailer, which he did until his early 90's. He continued to enjoy his life celebrating every birthday with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Enjoying boat-rides, fishing and even horseback riding.
He was also an accomplished artist who loved to paint landscapes, his grandchildren, and memories from his travels and childhood in Minnesota. He developed an interest in Genealogy in recent years researching his family tree when he was not enjoying connecting with people and seeing pictures and his great-grandchildren on Facebook. John loved living at the Townehouse and making new friends. His aptitude for shooting pool often surprised his younger opponents.
He is survived by sons, Glen (Land Whaley) Cicero, IN and Denis (Jane) Orleans, MI, 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1990.
John's family would like for you all to do something that makes you happy in John's memory today. We believe his life was healthy and long because of his propensity for enjoying hobbies.
