Johnnie Crawford Willis was a student at Athens Female College, and one of her classmates was Nellie Lee Vann of New Hope, Madison County, Alabama. Johnnie signed my grandmother's autograph book but did not leave a comment as most did. She just dated her name and signature on "May 20, 1898."

The school year was just finishing and the graduates were looking forward to the lives ahead of them. Johnnie was one of the classmates whose life was cut very short at the age of 24, and the family story is tragic from the young death of Johnnie Crawford Willis to the next generation and the story of her son, John Willis Atkinson.

Johnnie was born in Dothan, Alabama on February 2, 1882. Her parents were John J. and Fannie Willis. Siblings in 1900 were Johnnie age 18, Haywood (George Haywood) age 16, Ethel age 13, Kate age 8, and Lucille age 7.

On 18 April 1901, Johnnie C. Willis married Albert Cecil Atkinson at her hometown in Dothan, Alabama. The young couple moved to Pettusville, Limestone County, Alabama where Johnnie gave birth to 3 children. The first two births were little girls who apparently did not live past infancy. A son, John Willis Atkinson was born in 1903 and survived.

Johnnie died on 10 May 1906 at the age of 24 leaving her young husband and a three-year-old son, John Willis Atkinson.

In 1910, the widowed father, Albert C. Atkinson, along with his then seven-year-old son, John Willis, were living in the home of Edward Raney, an uncle, along with his aunt, a cousin, and his mother in Madison Cross Roads in Madison County, Alabama.

Albert C. Atkinson, the young widower, then died in 1911, leaving his 60-year-old mother to raise his now orphaned 8-year-old boy, John Willis Atkinson.

The family story is a sad one of losses and early deaths that happened far too early. May this family rest in peace.
