Fred and Hallie Williams

On Jan. 26, 2021, Hallie Jane Williams passed into the arms of Jesus while living in Jacksonville, Ore., near her daughter Andrea. Fred T. Williams went to be with Jesus on Jan. 31, 2021, while living near his son Tom in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Hallie was born in Gillette, Wyo., on Nov. 24, 1930, and spent most of her early years in Ogallala, Neb. She was the third child of Daniel and Virginia Saunders, with older brother Dan and sister Francis.

Fred was born on Dec. 27, 1927, in Brule, Neb., just a few miles west of Ogallala. He was one of four children born to Mabel and Frederick Williams, with two older sisters, Beverly and Peggy and his twin sister Mary Lou. He spent his entire early life in Brule before entering the U.S. Navy after high school.

Both Fred and Hallie ended up going to college at the University of Wyoming, Fred studying wildlife biology and Hallie completing degrees in music and English with a minor in education in just three years. During her college years she was very active both in and out of college, walking on to the University Rifle Team and singing both in and out of the University, winning several competitions with her beautiful voice.

Fred and Hallie were married in Ogallala on March 23, 1952, and remained married for 68 years. Soon after, they moved to Laramie, Wyo., where Fred began his career with the Wyoming Department of Game and Fish, while Hallie began her teaching career. While in Laramie they had their four children: Lindy (Jim) Toering of Soldotna, Alaska, Tom (Irene) Williams of Fairbanks, Andrea (Jim) Eckroth of Central Point, Ore., and Martin Williams of Wasilla, Alaska.

Eventually they moved to Lander, Wyo., and then in 1963, they moved to Glennallen, Alaska, driving the mostly graveled Alcan Highway towing a trailer while camping along the way with the four children and dog. It was quite an adventure with many family memories from that trip.

Fred worked for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while Hallie started teaching in a small one-room high school just in time for the great Alaska earthquake of 1964. They both continued working until retiring in 1987 and remained in the Copper River Basin until Hallie moved to Soldotna to be close to her oldest daughter Lindy, and then on to Chandler, Ariz., living across the street from her two older siblings. When they both passed, she moved to Casper, Wyo., to be close to Andrea and her husband Jim and later followed them to Oregon.

Raising a family in the small town of Glennallen, Fred and Hallie were devoted parents and gave their children all the direction and attention one could have ever hoped for while continuing their careers, where they both became very well respected. They loved the outdoors and took their children on many adventures, taking thousands of pictures recording their happy life. Fred is remembered for being instrumental in developing the Volunteer Fire Departments as well as serving on the Board of Copper Valley Electric for over 45 years.

Fred and Hallie are survived by their children; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Hallie can be best remembered for her joy in life and family and would be tremendously pleased with donations to any Animal Rescue organization. Fred is best remembered for his love of family, engaging personality and wit, and since one of his lifelong passions was Alaska history, a donation to the local museum would have made him very happy.
