On Monday, September 10, 2018, God in his awesome wisdom, called his servant Daniel Lionel Sanders to his heavenly home. He was born in Smithfield, North Carolina to the late David Daniel and Betty Lucretia Sanders in Smithfield, North Carolina.

Lionel was educated in the Public School System of Johnston County (Smithfield), North Carolina. Shortly after graduating from Johnston County Training School, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and began his professional career. He was not one for idly sitting around, so was continuously employed, except for a brief period while undergoing rehabilitation and recovery from a work related injury.

Lionel returned to his hometown of Smithfield, NC in 1984 and began work as a General Operator at Channel Master in Smithfield, North Carolina and a van driver for Johnston County Area Transit System.
At a very young age, Lionel accepted the Lord as his savior. He joined and was baptized at Saint Peter Church of Christ Disciples of Christ in Smithfield, North Carolina. Throughout his life, his faith in God remained his most constant source of strength and inspiration. Regardless of his health, he remained active for the Lord. In 2014, Lionel and Regina rededicated themselves to Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. There under the tutelage of Reverend Anthony P. Raeford, Lionel excelled in his Christian journey, serving as a Deacon and on the Trustee Board.

Lionel had a genuine desire to help others, with a very civic mind and he never hesitated to take action! He fought for change in his community by, serving on and working with the Smithfield Community Planning Board, the Smithfield Recreational & Aquatic Center and the Mayor’s Advisory Board. Lionel continued his community service by serving as a past President of the Johnston County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Lionel enjoyed life and simply wanted the world to be a better place for everyone. As his health began to decline, during this year, he was not able to travel and get around, but he remained positive and an influential part of his medical care. He often spoke of how appreciative he was of the many visitors, telephone calls and get-well cards he had received.

Daniel leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 32 years, Regina “Penny” Sanders of Smithfield NC; sons: Daniel Lionel Sanders Jr. of Woodbridge, VA, Darryl Galloway of Smithfield, NC and James (Kendra) Galloway of Raleigh, NC; daughters: Dawn (Adrian) Jordan of Philadelphia, PA and Lisa (Timothy) Austin of Smithfield, NC; two sisters: Mary D. Sanders of Philadelphia. PA and Martha Jean (Jimmie) Thompson of Upper Marlboro, MD; three sisters-in-law; a brother in-law, Frank Penney Jr. of Wilson, NC; 14 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Reverend Beatrice R. Penny of Smithfield, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolyn Belinda Sanders Revell
