Nancy Marjory (Grant) Hill
1921-2021

Nancy Marjory (Grant) Hill passed away peacefully in the afternoon of February 10, 2021, in Lake Stevens, Washington. She was 99 years young. Born on June 30, 1921 in Marblehead, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Daniel Peter Grant and Georgie Alice Grant. Daniel hailed originally from Sunnybrae, Nova Scotia, Canada, and was a carpenter by trade. Georgie was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and was a homemaker.

Coming from a very musical family of four brothers and one sister, Nancy was blessed with a gorgeous soprano voice. At the age of twelve, she started singing with a church youth choir, and while in high school, she sang in choirs and starred in Gilbert and Sullivan musicals. Starting at the age of fifteen, Nancy studied opera for eight years in Boston. She planned to travel to Europe to pursue an opera career after high school, but World War II prevented her dreams from becoming a reality. At the age of twenty two, her singing instructor persuaded her to sing in hotels and night clubs in Boston. It was at one of the clubs that she met her future husband, Richard G. Hill. Richard was serving our country in the U.S. Navy.

Richard and Nancy married in 1944, in Key West, Florida. Through the years, as the Navy took them throughout the United States and Okinawa, Japan, three children were born, Andrea Johnne in 1945, Lisa Margot in 1952, and Kerren Lee in 1956.

While living the life of a naval officer’s wife, Nancy was featured in soprano solos with the 3rd Marine Division Band, overseas in Okinawa, Japan. Richard later retired from the Navy near Chicago, Illinois. In the late 1970’s, while living in Illinois, Nancy worked with an agent and posed for magazine ads. She was also very involved with singing in church and performing in community theater plays and musicals. She and her husband moved to Camano Island, Washington in 1983.

Nancy is survived by her three daughters, two son-in-law’s, three grand-children, and six great-grandchildren. She welcomed everyone into her family and is also survived by two step-grandsons, seven step-grandchildren, and three step-great grand-children.

Her lessons learned that she wished to pass onto others: “don’t indulge in gossip and in judging others.” Also, she wanted to be known as “someone who is genuine …what you see is what you get!”
