It is speculated that his middle name was either originally Gayle (or was at least derived from) his maternal great grandfather's middle name, Matthew Gayle Deatherage.
One of his mother's younger brothers was named Samuel Gayle Deatherage. He was a physician in Sugar Land, Texas early in the 20th century, and he had a son named Samuel Gayle Deatherage, Jr. who was Gay Hugo's first cousin.
After completing preparatory studies at the San Antonio Academy, Gay Hugo was a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1914-1918) and his records there confirm he earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering (degree conferred Jan 1918).
While at M.I.T., he was a member of the Electrical Engineering Society, the Mechanical Engineering Society, Theta Delta Chi fraternity, the track team, and was a participant in the Tech Show. The photograph of him on this page is from the 1918 edition of "Technique," the M.I.T. yearbook.
In 1920, he was married to Emily L. McKnight in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Gay Hugo died in Indianapolis, Indiana where he was working as an aviator. His death was caused by diabetes which had been diagnosed only two years prior to his death.
After her husband's death, Emily lived in Texas for awhile. In several city directories (1922-1925) she was recorded as a "saleslady" for Volk Brothers, one of the largest and most reputable department stores of that time in Dallas, Texas.
