Edna P. Fillingsness entered her heavenly home at the age of 87 on March 13, 2021. She was surrounded by family. Edna was born on April 24, 1933, on a farm near Yale, SD, to parents Samuel and Helene (Bieger) Bauer. Upon the death of her father when she was 8, her mother obtained her teaching certificate. This resulted in many moves and Edna learned how to be independent when she was very young.

Edna graduated as salutatorian for her class at Augustana Academy. Following a year at Augustana College to receive her teaching certificate, Robert Fillingsness and Edna were married on May 13, 1953. Together they raised six children.

Edna was profoundly impacted by the ministry of her grandfather, the Very Reverend Paul Bieger. Her life was dedicated to serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whom she accepted into her heart at a very early age. Edna joined Skrefsrud Lutheran Church in 1953 and has remained active there throughout the years, serving in a variety of committee positions, teaching Sunday & Bible School, Sewing Circle and Ladies Aid (now WMF).

While supporting Robert’s work on the farm, Edna began working in the dietary department at Bethesda of Beresford in 1975. She quickly assumed the role of Dietary Manager and served in that role for 21 years. After retiring from that role, she continued to work part-time, serving the Bethesda community almost 40 years in entirety. In order to make each resident feel special, she began making individual birthday cakes for each one. This continued long after her retirement for a total of 35 years.

Edna and Robert were avid supporters of the 4-H organization. She enjoyed the opportunity to judge Food and Nutrition, as well as Food Preservation exhibits, at the county and state levels. Edna also became the Food Preservation Chairman for the Lincoln County Open Class division. She joined the Tuesday Sues/Neighbors Extension Club and was a member for over 50 years, taking on club and county leadership roles. She had a passion for life-long learning.

Edna’s special gift was baking and providing everyone’s favorites. Many enjoyed her cinnamon rolls after church, homemade buns at Skrefsrud’s Wild Game Feed, cookies baked for children, grandchildren, and friends, lefse for the church bazaar and even her annual lutefisk dinner for the residents of Bethesda.

Time with her children and grandchildren was precious and treasured. She made an effort to let each one know how special he or she was to her. Edna’s last wish was for all to develop a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Edna is survived by her six children: Charlotte (Geoff) White of Kanawha, IA, Dorothy (Bill) Yeager of Cottonwood Falls, KS, Bob (Rhonda) of Beresford, SD, Sonja (Scott) Ledford of Columbus, KS, Connie (Dave) Dahl of Ft. Pierre, SD, and Janel (Craig) Bak of Beresford, SD. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as a sister-in-law Estelle Olsen of Sioux Falls, SD, and many other family members.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, parents, Samuel and Helene, as well as a great-grandson.

Visitation will be 5-7PM Tuesday, March 16th at Skrefsrud Lutheran Church, 46920 292nd Street, Beresford, SD 57004. Please follow Covid-19 guidelines per family request. Private family funeral services will be held with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
