David Ellis Fulmer Age 84, after a prolonged struggle with increasingly complex health challenges, died on Oct. 1 2009 in Davis, CA, surrounded by loving family while the Band played on.
Born on Nov. 17, 1924, David was the beloved son of L. Roy Fulmer and Janette Wheaton Ellis, brother of Elroy Menasco Fulmer and Mary Fulmer Wood.
Growing up in Berkeley, CA Dave met the love of his life, Phoebe-Jean MacCaughey at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley youth group, when he was 14. Dave and Phoebe married four years later, on Aug 13, 1944, and happily celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They have five children; Janis Chambers of Eagle River, Alaska, Mark Fulmer of Sacramento CA, Claudia Morray of Dover, Mass., Lindsay Fulmer of Mountain View, CA, and Elizabeth Andrea (Henderson) of Davis, CA. Dave was the beloved grandpa of 11, great grandfather of 12, uncle of a host of nieces and nephews, and considered "Grandpa Dave" by many young friends. He will be dearly missed by all. At the top of the list of Dave's professional accomplishments as a musician, performer, and director include his many years with Jack Daniel's Distillery, where he re-created Jack Daniels Original Silver Cornet Band, writing, directing, producing concert shows, and leading the band as the "Perfesser". Touring for 17 years, the band played such varied venues as Lincoln Center, the Grand Ol' Opry, and the White House, and were featured in two PBS specials. Other passions include travel (especially annual summer vacations at Lake Tahoe), cars, and creative pursuits including painting, sketching, and woodcarving. More than any other accomplishments, Dave took great delight in his family. He fostered and encouraged creative talent in family and friends, and was a true mentor and inspiration to many. His enthusiasm, humor and love bring lasting joy. A service of celebration and thanksgiving for David's life will be held Nov. 21 at 2pm at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley, 2345 Channing Way, Berkeley CA 94704. Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Berkeley Music Ministry, Habitat for Humanity, or the charity of your choice.
