U.S. Congressman. Born in Wallingford, Connecticut, he attended Cheshire Academy, graduated from Union College New York, in 1821, studied law at the New Haven Law School, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1825. He was prosecuting attorney of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1830 and was President of Cleveland's first City Council in 1836. In 1841, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving until 1843. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, was judge of the Superior Court of Cleveland, (1848-50) and a delegate to the Ohio State constitutional conventions, (1849, 50). He also was a member of the Cleveland City Council, until his death at age 78.
