Gaffney, SC- Sergeant First Class Dennis E. Parker age 77, U.S. Army Retired, of the Goucher community, passed away March 13, 2021 at his home.

He was born April 7, 1943 in Gaffney, the youngest child of the late James Crawford Parker and Juanita Hunter Parker.

SFC Parker served 21 years in the U.S. Army, having begun his career in 1961 and retiring in 1982. He served in the Vietnam War in 1968 and 1969 in and around Cu Chi, where he earned his Combat Infantry Badge in actions defending Saigon while a member of the 25th Infantry Division.

He counted every day a bonus after surviving combat in Vietnam.

During his career, he served in SC, GA, KY, OK, IN, and WI, as well as abroad in (South) Vietnam, South Korea, and (West) Germany. He retired out of Ft. Benning, GA.

After his Army career, he and his family came home to live on the Parker place in Goucher where he was raised. He attended Spartanburg Technical College and started a second career at The Timken Company as a maintenance mechanic. Afterwards he worked with several smaller companies. He was a self taught computer "guru", and enjoyed sharing his ever growing knowledge and skills of them with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carole Erwin Parker, as well as his four children: Robin D. (Martin) Farwell of Pauline, Tammy D. (Andy) Smith of Lugoff, Philip E. (Amber) Parker of Chester, and Julie A. (Brian) Motts of Gaffney. He is also survived by nine grand children, two great-grand children, three nieces, and many other members of his wife's family (the Erwin's, also of Gaffney).

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his three siblings: Mrs. Polly Parker (Loyd) Teaster of Pacolet, Everett Lee Parker, and Mrs. Hazel Parker (Homer) Alexander of Pauline.

A Memorial Service honoring the life of SFC Parker will be held on March 20, 2021 at 1:30 pm at Apostolic Life of Gaffney. Receiving of family and friends will begin at 12:30 pm. The family is at the home of his daughter Julie.
