The first of five daughters, Rose was born in Grand Forks on October 12, 1918 to Olaf and Marie Lundby. Her parents were hearing-impaired and used sign language, a skill the family shared throughout life. After her education and while waitressing at a café in Warren, MN, she met her husband, John H. Dean, a Soo Line Railroad telegraph operator and agent. They married on June 14, 1942 in Mahnomen, MN and moved to Adams, ND, residing for 33 years in the railroad depot, raising a son and three daughters.
A devoted wife and mother, Rose enjoyed homemaking, known for sharing baked goods, “rosettes,” making jellies and canning garden vegetables. She worked selling ladies’ fashions, waitressing and housekeeping. After retirement in 1979, the couple moved to Edinburg, ND where they were long-time members of the former Church of God of The Firstborn.
From a tender age, music and singing were a beloved part of Rose’s life. She often spoke of her first solo “Building Up The Temple Of The Lord,” sung atop an apple crate to passersby for a penny. Her strong Christian faith guided her life and called her to music ministry. She was self-taught, playing piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, and wrote inspirational songs. Rose and John shared music at church, revival meetings, and care homes, sometimes with family members or giggling granddaughters.
After John’s passing in 1986, Rose met the challenge of a new life, traveling the U.S. and to the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, including a special trip to the Holy Land. She enjoyed “wintering” with family in California and Arizona. In her 70s, Rose, daughter Janet, and granddaughter Bonita began a touring gospel-singing group, Generations III, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Rose loved entertaining at home, and in summer her yard was filled with flowers. Relishing a bargain, she hosted rummage sales and sold her floral crafts and creations. In her early 90s, she sang with a “senior band” led by the late Pastor Harvey Jackson, was a member of Edinburg Senior Citizens and volunteered at Good Samaritan Home in Park River, ND. In October 2014, Rose moved to Sunrise Estates in Park River, ND. Via daughter Sandra, she experienced the wonders of Facebook, delighted by many new friends and inspiring “followers” and fans.
Survivors include son Roger Dean, Kapa’a, HI; daughters Donna Dean, Alexandria, MN; Janet (Donnie) Novak, Veseleyville, ND; Sandra (James) Marlowe, Gilroy, CA; sisters Kay Abata, Rapid City, SD; Hazel (Harry) Graham, Eulis, TX; Dorothy (Rollie) Watts, Kenosha, WI; grandchildren Amanda (Mike) Vignery, Roger Dean Jr., Leslie Dean, Jennifer (Lee) Liddle, Bonita Novak, Jon (Nina) Marlowe, Megan (Wes) Penney; great-grandchildren Derek, Gretchen, Adam (Sarah), Tyler (Megan), Kellie (David), Trevor, Levi, Karlee, Dana, Lucas, Reese, Blake, Bryce, and Brant; great-great grandchildren Ashten, Kobi, Aly, Ryder, James, Everly and another on the way!
