Arlene Elsie Doe, 89, New England, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. Arlene’s Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Ladbury Funeral Service with Pastor Mike Pretzer officiating. Inurnment will take place at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, New England.
Arlene was born on July 22, 1931 to Gilbert and Ursula (Roe) Redetzke in rural Hettinger county. She grew up on the family farm and learned the meaning of hard work. She attended grade school in Kennedy township and went on to graduate from New England Public School in 1949.
On June 8, 1949, Arlene married the love of her life, Earl Doe at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Regent. They lived on the Doe homestead before moving to a farm of their own in 1952. Here they would raise six children, Ted, Tracy, Warren, Cindy, Sherry and JoLynn.
Along with raising children, they raised a small herd of beef cattle, a handful of dairy cows, a flock of sheep and numerous chickens. They also grew corn and wheat on their small grain farm.
Arlene worked by Earl’s side through the years as they expanded their dairy and grain farm. There wasn’t a chore Arlene couldn’t handle. From operating machinery and milking cows, to making homemade meals.
Arlene served as the Tepee Butte township clerk for 45 years. She participated with local ladies in the homemaker’s club. She also taught Sunday school and was an active member in the church quilting group.
Even though Arlene led a busy life, she enjoyed taking part in activities such as league bowling and square dancing. She loved to play cards, roll dice or work on putting together puzzles. Arlene took joy in traveling. Her and Earl travelled to many destinations, seeing numerous sites from coast to coast.
Arlene had various hobbies. Gardening, canning, baking, quilting and embroidery were just to name a few. However, milking cows was her favorite pastime, as she continued to help milk the cows until she was 77 years old.
Through the years Arlene enjoyed writing and receiving cards and letters from her relatives. Family get togethers and birthday parties were always something she looked forward to. Her nieces and nephews all held a special place in her heart.
Arlene loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took pride in caring for them through the years. They could always get something to eat, something to drink and something to watch.
Her kitchen was always open. Whether it was a cookie and a cup of coffee or a full meal, she always welcomed guests. Arlene was also very thrifty. There wasn’t a pair of pants she couldn’t patch or a container she couldn’t repurpose.
Arlene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a wonderful caregiver to the people who surrounded her. Her life was not always easy but she didn’t complain. She always put others first and didn’t want anyone to worry about her. Arlene will truly be missed by those who shared in her life.
