Mrs. Doss was born March 2, 1940 in Turner County and was the daughter of Ben Walker Hand and Ethel Smith Hand, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Russell Madison Doss who passed away on October 1, 2006. In addition, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Smith Hand and her very special niece, Sandy Hand.
Mrs. Doss moved to Tift County at a very young age and remained there for the rest of her life. She was a supportive farmer’s wife, mother, and homemaker. Her family was her world. She would drive a tractor, plant trees, work in tobacco, cut cabbage, whatever was necessary for the survival of the family farm. She was an excellent cook and made delicious cakes and candy. On holidays, she would go all out. She believed in an over- abundance of food. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chula where she kept the church nursery during Sunday School for over 30 years. She has rocked many of the church children to sleep on those Sunday mornings.
Mrs. Doss was a graduate of Tifton High School where she was a star basketball player. She loved to tell about the night that she made a winning goal from center court. She married her high school sweetheart after high school graduation. One of her favorite passions was working in her yard. She loved to plant, nurture and grow all types of flowers, plants, and trees. She definitely had a green thumb and created a beautiful yard, year after year.
Mrs. Doss is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Lynn Doss Thornhill of Tifton and Vonda and Van Fenn of Chula; three grandchildren that she loved and adored, Madison MaLynn Thornhill, Russell Everett Fenn, and Andrew Doss Fenn; one sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Bill Sandifer of Tifton; one sister-in-law, Kate Hand of Ty Ty; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
