John Arthur Spencer, 61, of Cheboygan passed away on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. John was born in Grand Rapids on August 12, 1959, the son of John and Leona (Mitchell) Spencer.

John grew up in Grand Rapids but graduated from Walled Lake High School and later earned his Bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University. On June 20, 1987, John married Karen Bell who blessed him with 33 years together. John worked for the State of Michigan as a surveyor.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed spending time outside (only coming inside to eat and sleep some days), loved his man cave (his barn), working on his tractors, but most of all, loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. John was a huge talker with an even bigger heart. He was a member of the Church of the Straits, often volunteering for their food kitchen.

John is survived by his wife, Karen, his parents, three children, Autumn (Matt) DiMambro, Kimberly (Devin) Cartwright, and Matthew (Cornelia) Bishop, three grandchildren, Violet, Jackson, and Valen, brothers Jeffrey (Robin) and Joseph, several nieces and nephews, his special cousin, Corey, and his dogs, Cloie, Diamond, and Chet.

A private family service will take place in the future.

Memorial contributions in John’s honor may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

The Nordman-Christian Funeral is caring for the family.
