Sarah Elizabeth Morgan Lee, only child of the late Hubert and Patti Glascoe Morgan, was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on October 12, 1930. She departed this life on March 5, 2021 at 90 years young!
Sarah, a singer and pianist from an early age, had the distinction of performing two duets with Marian Anderson, famed contralto! A graduate of Fisk University, where she majored in education with a minor in music, she was a member of the famed Fisk University Jubilee Singers.
When Sarah moved to Hartford, she embarked upon a career with the State of CT as a child welfare social worker. She became a member of Union Baptist Church where she met and married Herman R. Lee Jr., a native of Hartford. They had three children, Herman, Warren, and Yvonne. Sarah sat on the Board of Directors of Women’s League Day Care. She was instrumental in developing a tutoring program for Hartford youth through her church and was an active member since 1953. She was involved in her community, sitting on the Bloomfield Library Board and held memberships in Jack and Jill, Inc., the Hartford Federation of Teachers and numerous professional organizations.
Sarah returned to school to obtain her Masters’ Degree in education from Central CT State University, in May 1971. She then went on to earn 30 more credits in addition to her Master’s. She re-entered the workforce and spent the rest of her educational career in Hartford, teaching at John C. Clarke Elementary School. Education being a cornerstone of Sarah’s life, she sent her three children to college.
Sarah was a Golden member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated having served more than 60 years, and spent many years as a member of the Hartford-Area graduate chapter.
Sarah leaves to mourn her passing, her son Herman Lee III, and three grandchildren who reside in California, her aunt Annie Glascoe of Raleigh, North Carolina, three brothers-in-law-Roy Craddock, Alfred Booth, and Henry Long, several cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family Michael L. and Stacey Scotchman and their sons Michael T. and Marlon Scotchman, Christel Ford Berry, her attorney and surrogate daughter, and close to her heart, live-in caregiver Farida Lubanga.
Sarah was also predeceased by her aunts and uncles- Olivia Shelton, Margie Cooper, Warren Glascoe, and Thomas Glascoe, her sister-in laws-Rosalind Lee Craddock, Jackie Lee Booth, Geraldine Lee Long, Gwen Lee, and, Carolyn Lee Smith, her brother-in-law Joseph Smith, and her companion of forty years, Benjamin Scotchman.
